The EU's new Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) replaces Directive 2006/66/EC, introducing stricter battery management. Effective from August 17, 2023. Learn the impact and how to comply.
Differences between the old and new regulations
Clarification of battery categories:
The new battery regulation clarifies its scope of application, covering all types of batteries in the EU market (except for specific purposes), and further subdivided into five categories: portable batteries, starting lighting and automotive ignition batteries, light power batteries, automotive power batteries and industrial batteries.
More stringent requirements:
The new regulations specify a number of new or more stringent requirements, including the calculation of product carbon footprint, the use of recycled materials, the restriction of heavy metal hazardous substances, performance and durability, the removability and replaceability of batteries, safety requirements, due diligence, and the disposal of waste batteries, etc. These requirements need to be evaluated by the EU Notified Body during implementation. As a third-party certification body with NB qualifications, Intertek can provide relevant certification services to enterprises.
Transition from directive to regulation:
Unlike directives, the new battery regulation is a legal act of the European Union and has direct legal effect on all member states without further review and conversion. This means that the regulation is more mandatory and authoritative.
Future Outlook and Response Strategies
The EU's new battery regulations reflect its emphasis on batteries and related industries in the context of a low-carbon economy. Therefore, my country's battery industry and related companies should ensure that they meet regulatory requirements as soon as possible to maintain healthy development in the EU market.
As the world pays more and more attention to environmental protection and sustainable development, the battery industry is also facing stricter supervision and higher requirements. The new EU battery regulations are a reflection of this trend, and also provide a new challenge and opportunity for my country's battery companies. Only by preparing in advance, constantly innovating and improving can we be invincible in the fierce international competition.
